GE Washer DE Error: Lid/door open detected
This guide covers GE washer dE error in detail to help you diagnose and resolve the issue. What Does GE Washer Error Code dE Mean? Error code dE means the control board detected the lid is open or was opened during a cycle. It appears on GE Profile PTW900/PTW700 top-load, GTW, GNW, and Hotpoint HTW […]
Quick Assessment
Answer to continue safely
Is it safe to keep using?
No. While dE itself is low severity, a washer that consistently shows dE due to a faulty lid switch will never complete a spin cycle, leaving laundry soaking wet.
Can I reset the code?
Yes. Simply close the lid and press Start to resume. No power cycle is needed for a standard mid-cycle dE. If the code persists despite a closed lid, unplug for 30 seconds and retry.
When to stop immediately?
Stop if you notice: dE appears every cycle even though you did not open the lid, The lid striker tab is visibly broken or missing.
Symptoms You May Notice
Washer stops mid-cycle and door will not lock
The washer stops agitating or spinning and shows dE on the display. The code flashes for approximately 30 seconds, after which the cycle is cancelled if the lid is not closed.
Lid light or indicator stays on after closing the lid
The lid-open indicator remains active on the control panel even when the lid appears to be fully down, suggesting the lid switch is not sensing closure.
Washer starts normally but stops at fill or agitation
On some GTW models dE triggers during agitation rather than at start-up, indicating the lid was opened briefly or the lid switch contacts are intermittent.
Loud click absent when closing the lid
A healthy lid switch produces an audible click when the lid striker presses the switch plunger. Missing this click suggests the striker is bent or the switch has failed.
Possible Causes
Lid opened mid-cycle by user
The most common cause is simply opening the lid to add clothing or check the cycle. Closing the lid and pressing Start resumes the cycle.
DIY PossibleLid not closing fully due to laundry obstruction
An item of clothing draped over the tub rim can prevent the lid from pressing the switch striker far enough to register as closed.
DIY PossibleWorn or faulty lid switch assembly
The lid switch plunger wears with repeated use. When the switch fails to close its internal contacts, the board reads the lid as open regardless of its physical position.
Requires ProfessionalSafe Checks You Can Do
-
1
Close the lid firmly and press Start
Push the lid down until you hear or feel a distinct click from the lid switch striker. Then press Start to resume the paused cycle. Many dE faults resolve immediately this way.
On Hotpoint HTW and GE GTW models the cycle will automatically resume within 5 seconds of the lid being properly closed without pressing Start.
-
2
Check for clothing obstructing the lid
Open the lid and look around the entire tub rim for items of clothing that may be hanging over the edge. Redistribute laundry so everything is inside the basket and the lid can close completely.
Large items like sheets and comforters are particularly prone to bunching up against the lid.
-
3
Test the lid switch striker
With the washer unplugged, gently press the plastic lid striker (the tab on the underside of the lid) against the switch opening on the cabinet. It should depress smoothly and spring back. A loose or missing striker tab needs replacement.
A broken striker tab can sometimes be seen as a small plastic fragment inside the switch opening on the cabinet.
When to Call a Professional
Contact a qualified technician if:
