GE Washer UE Error: Unbalanced load detected
This guide covers GE washer UE error in detail to help you diagnose and resolve the issue. What Does GE Washer Error Code UE Mean? Error code UE stands for unbalanced error. It appears on GE Profile PFW950, PFW870, GTW, and PTW900 washers when the control detects that the drum is wobbling excessively during the […]

Answer to continue safely
Is it safe to keep using?
No. While UE is typically a simple load redistribution issue, repeated unchecked imbalance causes long-term wear to the suspension system, bearings, and drum mounts.
Can I reset the code?
Yes. After redistributing the load, press Start to resume the spin cycle from where it paused. No power reset is needed for UE — the washer will automatically retry spin once the load is rebalanced.
When to stop immediately?
Stop if you notice: Severe banging persists even with a small, evenly distributed load, The washer is visibly rocking or has shifted position.
Symptoms You May Notice
Loud banging or thumping before spin stops and UE displays
The drum accelerates into spin and begins banging loudly against the cabinet walls as the unbalanced load causes the drum to wobble. The control stops spin to protect the machine and displays UE.
Spin speed never reaches full RPM
The washer attempts to build spin speed but the unbalanced load prevents stable rotation. The drum slows, attempts to rebalance by adding water or tumbling, then tries again before eventually displaying UE.
Laundry ends up balled to one side of the drum
Opening the door or lid after UE reveals all clothes bunched together on one side or clumped into a single mass rather than distributed around the drum.
Washer moves or walks across the floor during spin attempts
Severe imbalance can cause the entire appliance to vibrate and shift position. This is particularly common on GFW front-loaders if shipping bolts were removed but transit damage remains.
Possible Causes
Uneven load distribution
A single heavy item or items that have clumped together create an asymmetric mass that wobbles at spin speeds. Redistributing items by hand resolves this.
DIY PossibleWashing a single heavy item
A single comforter, blanket, or pair of jeans cannot self-balance in the drum. GE recommends adding 1–2 similar-weight items to balance the load.
DIY PossibleWorn shock absorbers or suspension springs
Shock absorbers and suspension rods dampen drum movement during spin. When worn, even a moderately balanced load can trigger UE from excessive drum travel.
Requires ProfessionalSafe Checks You Can Do
-
1
Redistribute the laundry
Open the door or lid after UE triggers. Manually separate any clumped items and redistribute them evenly around the drum. On top-loaders arrange items around the agitator post or impeller plate.
For front-loaders, drape large items like towels loosely around the inside of the drum rather than bunching them together.
-
2
Remove one or two items if the load is large
Overloading prevents items from freely moving into a balanced position. Remove 2–3 items and set them aside for a second load, then restart the spin cycle.
A GE Profile PFW950 5.0 cu. ft. front-loader handles up to about 20 lbs of laundry. Estimating by weight rather than visual fullness helps prevent overloading.
-
3
Check the washer is level
Place a bubble level on top of the washer. All four feet should be firmly on the floor with no rocking. Adjust the leveling feet by turning them clockwise to raise or counterclockwise to lower until the bubble is centered.
Tighten the lock nuts on each adjustable foot after leveling to prevent the feet from shifting with vibration over time.

When to Call a Professional
Contact a qualified technician if:
- UE triggers consistently with small balanced loads — shock absorbers or suspension springs require inspection
- Washer walks across the floor during spin — leveling feet and suspension system need professional assessment
