GE Washer E30 Error: Drain pump not responding

This guide covers GE washer E30 error in detail to help you diagnose and resolve the issue. What Does GE Washer Error Code E30 Mean? Answer to continue safely

Is it safe to keep using?

No. A washer that cannot drain leaves standing water in the drum, which risks mold growth, garment damage, and the door remaining permanently locked until the fault is fixed.

Can I reset the code?

Yes. Unplug for 60 seconds to reset the board. However, E30 will return on the next cycle if the pump filter is still clogged or the pump is faulty. Always address the root cause before resetting.

When to stop immediately?

Stop if you notice: Water will not drain even after cleaning the pump filter, You notice a burning smell coming from the washer.

Symptoms You May Notice

Water remains in the tub and E30 displays

The washer stops mid-cycle with a tub full of water and flashes E30. The drum will not spin because water has not been removed, and the door remains locked for safety.

No pump sound during drain phase

In a normal cycle you can hear the drain pump motor running. With E30, the drain phase is silent — the pump is not activating at all.

Door stays locked after the cycle ends

GE front-load models keep the door locked when water is detected in the drum. With E30 the door will not open because the machine still registers water.

Faint burning or rubber smell near the pump area

If the pump motor has seized or burned out, a faint electrical or rubber smell may be detectable near the bottom front panel of the machine.

Possible Causes

1

Clogged drain pump or filter

Lint, coins, hair ties, and small garments collect in the pump trap. A blocked pump cannot move water and the motor may stall, triggering E30.

DIY Possible
2

Faulty drain pump motor

The pump impeller or motor windings can fail from age, overheating, or a seized foreign object. A failed pump must be replaced.

3

Loose or corroded pump wiring connection

The electrical harness connector at the pump can loosen from vibration or corrode, interrupting the control board signal even if the pump itself is functional.

4

Defective control board

If the control board relay that powers the pump has failed, the pump will not receive voltage regardless of its condition.

Safe Checks You Can Do

These checks are safe for homeowners. No disassembly required. Do not remove panels or access internal components.
  1. 1

    Emergency drain the tub

On GE front-load models, locate the small access panel at the bottom front of the washer. Place towels on the floor, then slowly open the small drain hose cap or twist the filter counterclockwise to allow water to drain into a shallow pan.

Have a bucket and several towels ready — a full wash load can hold 10–15 gallons of water.

  2. 2

    Clean the pump filter

Once water is drained, fully unscrew the round pump filter (counterclockwise). Remove any lint, coins, debris, or small items from inside the filter housing. Rinse the filter under water and reinstall firmly.

GE recommends cleaning the pump filter every 6 months or after washing items with heavy lint like blankets.

  3. 3

    Test with a drain-only cycle

After cleaning the filter and reinstalling, plug the washer back in, select Drain & Spin, and press Start. Listen for the pump to activate. If it runs and drains, E30 should clear.

If the pump is silent and no water drains, the fault lies with the pump motor or wiring — stop here and call a technician.

When to Call a Professional

Contact a qualified technician if:

  • Filter is clean but E30 persists — pump motor or wiring harness requires testing with a multimeter
  • Control board relay may be faulty if pump tests good electrically but still does not run
