GE Washer E22 Error: Water fill timeout
This guide covers GE washer E22 error in detail to help you diagnose and resolve the issue. What Does GE Washer Error Code E22 Mean? Error code E22 means your GE washer failed to fill with water within the 8-minute window the control board allows. It appears on GE Profile PFW950, PFW870, GFW front-load, and […]
Quick Assessment
Answer to continue safely
Is it safe to keep using?
No. The washer will not complete a wash cycle and laundry will remain unwashed. Running repeated fill attempts strains the inlet valve and may worsen the underlying issue.
Can I reset the code?
Yes. Press the Power button to clear the code, then address the fill problem before restarting. On GE Profile PFW models you can also unplug for 60 seconds to reset the control board.
When to stop immediately?
Stop if you notice: Water is leaking from the supply hose connections, Valves and hoses are fine but the washer still will not fill.
Symptoms You May Notice
Washer stops mid-fill and displays E22
The drum begins filling but the cycle halts before the tub reaches the set water level. E22 flashes on the display and a fault tone sounds.
Drum is empty or barely wet after starting
Little to no water enters the drum even though the washer attempts to fill. You can hear the inlet valve trying to open but water flow is very slow.
Cycle cannot be restarted without clearing the code
Pressing Start again immediately triggers E22 again because the underlying fill problem has not been resolved.
Water supply hoses feel firm instead of slightly pressurized
When the washer is idle and supply valves are open, hoses should feel lightly pressurized. Soft, slack hoses indicate low or no water pressure reaching the machine.
Possible Causes
Closed or partially closed water supply valves
The hot and cold shut-off valves behind the washer must be fully open. Even a quarter-turn closure will restrict flow enough to trigger E22.
DIY PossibleClogged inlet valve filter screens
Small mesh screens inside the inlet valve ports trap sediment over time. When blocked they restrict water flow below the level the control expects.
DIY PossibleFaulty water inlet valve
The solenoid-operated inlet valve can fail electrically or mechanically, preventing it from opening fully even with clean screens and good pressure.
Requires ProfessionalDefective water level pressure sensor
If the pressure switch or sensor that monitors the water level fails, the control board may never register that the tub is full, causing a false E22.
Requires ProfessionalSafe Checks You Can Do
-
1
Check supply valves
Pull the washer slightly away from the wall and locate the hot (red) and cold (blue) shut-off valves. Turn each valve handle fully counterclockwise to ensure they are completely open.
Valves that have not been turned in years can seize partially closed. If the handle will not turn, call a plumber.
-
2
Inspect hoses for kinks
Trace both water supply hoses from the wall to the back of the washer. Straighten any kinks or bends and ensure the hoses are not pinched behind the machine.
Leave at least 4 inches of clearance between the washer and the wall to prevent hose kinking.
-
3
Clean the inlet valve screens
Turn off the water supply, then unscrew the hose fittings from the back of the washer. Use needle-nose pliers to carefully remove the small mesh screens inside each port and rinse them under running water.
Screens with heavy mineral deposits can be soaked in white vinegar for 30 minutes before rinsing.

When to Call a Professional
Contact a qualified technician if:
- Inlet screens are clean but water pressure at the valve port is weak — a plumber may need to check household water pressure
- E22 returns immediately after cleaning screens and opening valves — the inlet valve or pressure sensor likely requires replacement
