GE Refrigerator CI Error: Ice maker fault

This guide covers GE refrigerator CI error in detail to help you diagnose and resolve the issue. What Does GE Refrigerator Error Code CI Mean? The CI error code indicates the ice maker has not completed a successful production cycle within its expected window. GE Profile (PYE22, PWE23), Cafe (CYE22, CVE28), Monogram (ZIS48), and standard […]

Quick Assessment

Answer to continue safely

Is it safe to keep using?

Yes. A CI code does not affect food safety. The refrigerator and freezer continue cooling normally. You simply lose ice production until the fault is resolved.

Can I reset the code?

Yes. Press and hold the ice maker Test button (on the module face) for 3 seconds to run a manual test cycle. Alternatively, unplug the refrigerator for 60 seconds. The code clears after a successful ice-making cycle.

When to stop immediately?

Stop if you notice: Water is leaking from the ice maker area onto the floor, Ice maker makes loud banging or cracking sounds during a cycle.

Symptoms You May Notice

No ice produced for 24 hours or longer

The ice bin is empty or depleting and no new cubes are dropping, even though the ice maker arm is in the down (active) position.

Hollow, misshapen, or very small ice cubes

Partial fill cycles produce undersized or fused cubes, indicating low water flow or a clogged water inlet valve.

Loud buzzing from the ice maker area

The water inlet valve buzzes repeatedly as it attempts to open but receives insufficient water pressure (below 20 psi).

CI displayed on dispenser panel

The control panel shows "CI" with or without an audible alert after the ice maker cycle monitor detects a production failure.

Possible Causes

1

Clogged or frozen water supply line

The 1/4-inch supply line running to the refrigerator can kink or freeze, especially on GE Profile French door models where the line passes through the freezer door hinge area.

2

Failed water inlet valve

The solenoid valve that opens to admit water to the ice maker can fail electrically or become clogged with mineral deposits. Replacement valves for GNE27 and PYE22 cost from $35.

3

Ice maker module or control board fault

The ice maker head assembly electronics can fail, preventing the ejector motor or heater from completing a cycle. This is more common on Monogram ZIS48 and GE Profile PWE23 models.

Requires Professional

Safe Checks You Can Do

These checks are safe for homeowners. No disassembly required. Do not remove panels or access internal components.
  1. 1

Verify the ice maker is switched on and arm is down

Locate the on/off switch on the ice maker module (usually a rocker switch on the side) or the wire shut-off arm. Ensure the arm is in the lower (active) position. On GE Profile touchscreen models, check Settings > Ice Maker to confirm it is enabled.

A common accidental cause of CI codes is the ice bin being pushed in at an angle, which lifts the shut-off arm to the off position.

  2. 2

Check water supply and household pressure

Confirm the water shut-off valve behind the refrigerator is fully open. Disconnect the supply line and hold it over a bucket — a healthy flow should fill an 8 oz glass in under 10 seconds. If flow is poor, check for a kinked line or a clogged saddle valve.

GE recommends a minimum water supply pressure of 20 psi. At below 20 psi the inlet valve cannot open fully and CI codes result.

  3. 3

    Replace the water filter

A clogged water filter (beyond its 6-month or 300-gallon service life) restricts flow to the ice maker. Remove the filter — located in the upper right of the fresh-food section on most GE Profile models — and replace it with a GE RPWFE or XWFE filter. Press Reset Filter for 3 seconds after installation.

Test ice production immediately after filter replacement. New cubes should appear within 24 hours.

When to Call a Professional

Contact a qualified technician if:

  • Water supply and filter are fine but CI code persists after reset
  • Inlet valve tests open with 120V applied but no water flows — internal clog requiring valve replacement
  • Ice maker module fails the test cycle with no heater activation
