Quick Assessment
Answer to continue safely
Is it safe to keep using?
Yes. WF is a maintenance reminder only. The refrigerator and freezer continue operating normally. However, water quality and flow degrade with an over-due filter.
Can I reset the code?
Yes. Replace the filter, then hold Reset Filter for 3 seconds. The WF code and indicator light clear immediately. The timer resets to 6 months.
When to stop immediately?
Stop if you notice: Water is leaking around the filter housing after installation, Filter will not lock into position — check for compatibility with the specific GE model.
Symptoms You May Notice
Reduced water flow from dispenser
Water dispenses at a noticeably slower rate — filling a glass takes more than 15 seconds — because the clogged filter restricts flow.
Water tastes or smells slightly different
An exhausted filter no longer removes chlorine, sediment, and trace contaminants effectively, and water may have a mild chlorine taste or odor.
Ice maker producing fewer cubes
The ice maker fills more slowly through the clogged filter, reducing production volume and sometimes triggering a secondary CI code.
WF or orange/red filter indicator on panel
The dispenser control panel displays "WF" or illuminates the filter status indicator in orange or red to signal replacement is due.
Possible Causes
Filter at or beyond its service life
GE recommends replacing the filter every 6 months or 300 gallons. High-sediment water sources can exhaust a filter in 3–4 months.
DIY PossibleFilter reset not performed after last replacement
If a previous filter was replaced but the Reset Filter button was not held for 3 seconds, the timer continues counting and triggers WF prematurely.
DIY PossibleSafe Checks You Can Do
-
1
Replace the water filter
Locate the filter — inside the fresh-food section upper right on most GE Profile and Cafe models, or behind the lower grille on GNE27/GSS25 models. Turn counterclockwise a quarter turn or press the eject button to remove. Insert the new GE RPWFE, XWFE, or MWF filter and turn clockwise until it locks.
Use only genuine GE filters or NSF 42/53 certified compatible replacements. Generic filters from unknown brands can fail to seat properly and cause leaks.
-
2
Reset the filter indicator
After installing the new filter, press and hold the Reset Filter or Filter Reset button on the dispenser panel for 3 seconds until the light turns green or blue. On GE Profile touchscreen models, go to Settings > Water Filter > Reset.
Dispense and discard 2–3 gallons of water after a filter change to flush air and carbon fines from the new filter before drinking.
When to Call a Professional
Contact a qualified technician if:
- WF code returns immediately after a confirmed good filter installation and reset — filter sensor or control board fault
- Water leaks from the filter housing even with a correctly installed filter — housing cracked or O-ring damaged
