GE French door refrigerator recall 2022 — GE Appliances (a Haier Company), in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), recalled approximately 155,000 GE-brand French door refrigerators with bottom freezers because the freezer drawer handle can detach unexpectedly, posing a fall hazard.

Hazard Description

The freezer drawer handle on the recalled refrigerators can detach when a consumer pulls the freezer drawer open. When the handle suddenly gives way, the consumer can lose balance and fall, potentially sustaining serious injuries. Three consumers sustained serious fall injuries, and 37 total injuries were reported before the recall was issued.

Affected Models

This recall covers six models of GE-brand French door refrigerators with bottom freezers in fingerprint resistant stainless steel finish, manufactured from February 2020 through August 2021:

  • GFE26JYMNFFS
  • GNE27EYMKFFS
  • GNE27EYMNFFS
  • GNE27JYMKFFS
  • GNE27JYMNFFS

These refrigerators were sold at The Home Depot, Lowe’s, Best Buy, and other home improvement and appliance retailers nationwide and online from February 2020 through January 2022 for between $1,900 and $2,500 depending on model.

Units Affected

Approximately 155,000 refrigerators were included in this recall in the United States.

Incidents Reported

GE Appliances received 71 reports of the freezer drawer handle detaching, resulting in 37 reported injuries, including 3 serious fall injuries.

Ge Refrigerator Recall What to Do

  1. Check your model number on the label inside the refrigerator compartment door frame and compare it to the six affected models above.
  2. Open the freezer drawer carefully using two hands and minimal force until the handle has been repaired.
  3. Keep elderly or at-risk individuals from using the freezer drawer until the handle is replaced.
  4. Contact GE Appliances toll-free at (888) 345-4671 or the general GE line at 1-800-432-2737, Monday–Friday 8 a.m.–5 p.m. ET for a free handle replacement.
  5. Schedule the free repair. GE will provide and install a replacement freezer drawer handle at no charge.

Urgency: MODERATE–HIGH. With 37 injuries and 3 serious falls already documented, do not use the freezer drawer in the normal way until GE has installed the replacement handle. Contact GE promptly, especially in households with older adults or anyone at elevated fall risk.
