Hazard Description

The door switch in the microwave oven section can overheat and ignite plastic components in the control area, posing a fire hazard. Because these are built-in units installed flush with kitchen cabinetry, a fire that starts in the control panel can quickly spread to surrounding cabinet materials. Note: the lower thermal/conventional oven portion of these combo units does not pose a hazard — only the microwave section is affected.

Affected Brands and Models

This recall covers built-in combination microwave and conventional wall ovens sold under the following brand names: GE, GE Profile, and Kenmore. Units were available in white, black, bisque, and stainless steel finishes. Affected ovens were sold at department and appliance stores from January 2000 through December 2003 for between $1,500 and $2,000. Contact GE at (888) 240-2745 for the complete list of specific model and serial numbers covered by this recall.

Units Affected

Approximately 92,000 combination wall and microwave ovens were included in this recall in the United States.

Incidents Reported

GE was aware of 35 incidents of minor property damage caused by the overheating door switch and 1 incident in which the resulting fire damaged adjacent kitchen cabinets. No consumer injuries were reported at the time of the recall.

Ge Microwave Recall What to Do

  1. Stop using the microwave section immediately. You may continue to use the lower conventional oven only — the microwave door switch is the only affected component.
  2. Do not use the microwave until GE has performed the free repair or until you have received a rebate for replacement.
  3. Check your model and serial number on the label inside the oven door frame or in the owner’s manual.
  4. Contact GE toll-free at (888) 240-2745 or the general GE Appliances line at 1-800-432-2737, Monday–Friday 8 a.m.–8 p.m. ET and Saturday 9 a.m.–3 p.m. ET.
  5. Choose your remedy: GE offered a free repair, a $300 rebate toward a new GE brand unit, or a $600 rebate toward a new GE Profile brand unit.

Urgency: MODERATE–HIGH. Built-in microwave combo units are surrounded by cabinetry, which makes a control-area fire especially dangerous. Stop all microwave use on affected units and contact GE to arrange the free repair or a replacement rebate as soon as possible.
