This guide covers GE dishwasher C1 error in detail to help you diagnose and resolve the issue. What Does GE Dishwasher Error Code C1 Mean? Answer to continue safely

Is it safe to keep using?

No. Operating with standing water risks spilling during door opening and can damage the pump motor if run dry. Resolve the drain fault before resuming normal use.

Can I reset the code?

Yes. Press Cancel/Drain and allow the dishwasher to attempt a full drain cycle. If the tub empties, the code clears automatically. A hard reset (circuit breaker off for 1 minute) also clears the fault code from memory.

When to stop immediately?

Stop if you notice: Water is overflowing or pooling on the kitchen floor, The drain pump makes a loud grinding or screeching noise.

Symptoms You May Notice

Water remains in the tub

After the cycle ends or pauses, standing water is visible at the bottom of the dishwasher tub, indicating drainage did not complete.

C1 displayed on the control panel

The alphanumeric display shows "C1" and the cycle halts. On older LED-only models, the Start or Clean light may blink repeatedly.

Drain pump runs but water level does not drop

You can hear the pump motor humming, yet water stays at the same level — suggesting a blockage or pump restriction rather than a dead motor.

Cycle stops mid-wash

The dishwasher interrupts a wash or rinse phase and locks out further operation until the fault is cleared.

Possible Causes

1

Clogged drain filter or sump

Food debris and grease accumulating in the coarse and fine filters restricts water flow to the drain pump, causing the pump to time out.

DIY Possible
2

Kinked or obstructed drain hose

A bent or partially blocked drain hose between the dishwasher and the sink drain / garbage disposal prevents water from escaping quickly enough.

DIY Possible
3

Faulty drain pump or pump impeller

A worn impeller, seized pump motor, or damaged pump housing reduces pumping capacity. Replacement requires disassembly of the lower wash arm assembly.

Requires Professional

Safe Checks You Can Do

These checks are safe for homeowners. No disassembly required. Do not remove panels or access internal components.
  1. 1

    Clean the drain filter assembly

Remove the lower rack. Turn the cylindrical filter counter-clockwise and lift out both the coarse mesh and ultra-fine filters. Rinse under warm running water and scrub gently with a soft brush. Reinstall and run a short cycle.

GE recommends cleaning the filter monthly. A clogged filter is the most common cause of C1 on GDT and GDF models.

  2. 2

Inspect the drain hose for kinks

Pull the dishwasher slightly forward (after disconnecting power) and trace the drain hose from the pump to the sink drain or garbage disposal. Straighten any kinks and ensure the high-loop or air-gap is intact.

If connected to a new garbage disposal, confirm the knock-out plug inside the disposal inlet was removed.

  3. 3

    Reset the control board

Press Cancel/Drain to run a manual drain cycle. If water clears, cancel again and restart a normal wash. Alternatively, turn off the circuit breaker for 1 minute, restore power, and run a test cycle.

If C1 returns immediately after the reset without any standing water, the drain pump itself likely needs professional evaluation.

When to Call a Professional

Contact a qualified technician if:

  • Filter and drain hose are clean but C1 persists after multiple resets
  • Drain pump is audibly straining or completely silent during the drain phase
  • Water damage or mold is visible under the dishwasher base
