Hazard Description
An electrical failure in the dishwasher’s heating element can cause the element to ignite, posing a fire hazard to consumers. GE received reports of fires that caused extensive property damage in three cases. This defect is particularly dangerous because the dishwasher may be unattended or operating overnight when a fire starts.
Affected Brands and Models
This recall covers dishwashers sold under five brand names: GE, GE Adora, GE Eterna, GE Profile, and Hotpoint. Units were available in black, white, bisque, stainless steel, and CleanSteel exterior finishes. Affected dishwashers were sold from March 2006 through August 2009 for between $350 and $850. Incidents Reported
GE received 15 reports of dishwasher heating element failures, including 7 reports of fires. Of those fires, 3 caused extensive property damage. No consumer injuries were reported at the time of recall.
