GE Ice Maker CLEAN Error: Self-clean cycle required
This guide covers GE ice maker CLEAN error in detail to help you diagnose and resolve the issue. What Does GE Ice Maker CLEAN Mean? The CLEAN indicator means the ice maker has reached its scheduled cleaning interval and is prompting you to run the self-clean cycle. GE Profile Opal 1.0 and 2.0 models track […]
Quick Assessment
Answer to continue safely
Is it safe to keep using?
Yes. The CLEAN alert is a scheduled reminder — the unit continues making ice normally. However, ice quality and taste may be degraded if cleaning is significantly overdue. Run the clean cycle promptly.
Can I reset the code?
Yes. The CLEAN indicator resets automatically when the self-clean cycle completes successfully. It cannot be manually dismissed without running the clean cycle — this is intentional to ensure the cleaning is actually performed.
When to stop immediately?
Stop if you notice: Visible pink or black mold is present — do not consume ice until after a full clean and two rinse cycles, Ice has a strong chemical or sewage odor — indicates significant contamination.
Symptoms You May Notice
Ice has an off-taste or odor despite fresh water
Mineral scale or biofilm buildup in the water path imparts a stale, metallic, or musty taste to ice even after the reservoir is refilled with fresh filtered water.
CLEAN indicator light illuminates on front panel
The dedicated Clean LED on the Opal's front panel turns on and remains lit, or the SmartHQ app sends a cleaning reminder notification.
Ice production slows noticeably over time
Mineral scale accumulation on the evaporator and water lines reduces thermal efficiency and water flow, causing fewer ice pieces per cycle than when the unit was new.
Visible slime or discoloration inside the reservoir
Pink or dark-colored biofilm is visible on reservoir walls, the water pump cover, or the interior of the ice chute — a direct indicator that a cleaning cycle is overdue.
Possible Causes
Scheduled cleaning interval reached
The Opal tracks usage hours and triggers the CLEAN reminder at the manufacturer-recommended interval — typically every 3 months or after a set number of gallons processed.
DIY PossibleHard water mineral scale accumulation
Tap water with high mineral content (calcium, magnesium) deposits scale on the evaporator, pump, and water lines faster than the standard reminder interval, requiring more frequent cleaning.
DIY PossibleMold or biofilm growth in warm, humid conditions
Operating in a warm kitchen with the lid left open allows airborne spores to colonize the damp reservoir interior, triggering the CLEAN sensor or making the need visually obvious.
DIY PossibleSafe Checks You Can Do
-
1
Run the self-clean cycle
Empty the ice bin and reservoir. Fill the reservoir to the MAX line with a mixture of 1 oz of GE Opal cleaning solution (or a 1:1 mixture of white vinegar and water) per fill. Press and hold the Clean button for 3 seconds until the Clean LED flashes. The cycle runs for approximately 30 minutes.
GE recommends using its branded Opal cleaning solution for best results. White vinegar is an effective substitute but leaves a slight odor — run one fresh-water rinse cycle after cleaning.
-
2
Rinse with two fresh-water cycles
After the clean cycle completes, drain the cleaning solution completely using the drain plug at the rear. Refill the reservoir with clean filtered water and run a second 30-minute cycle (no cleaner). Drain again and refill for normal use.
Do not add ice cleaner to the side tank — cleaning solution should only go into the main reservoir to avoid contaminating the tank connector.
-
3
Wipe the reservoir and ice bin manually
After the rinse cycles, wipe the reservoir interior walls, pump cover, and ice bin with a soft cloth dampened with the diluted cleaning solution. Rinse with a clean damp cloth. This removes biofilm that the circulating clean cycle may not reach.
Use the GE Opal cleaning brush (included with some models or available separately) to clean the interior of the water chute tube where slime commonly accumulates.
When to Call a Professional
Contact a qualified technician if:
- CLEAN indicator returns within days of a completed clean cycle — sensor or cycle counter fault
- Visible scale deposits remain after multiple clean cycles — water treatment may be needed
