Hazard Description

A short circuit in the dryer’s internal wiring can create an electrical shock hazard for consumers who are using the dryer without a properly grounded electrical connection. Because gas dryers still require an electrical supply for controls, motors, and ignition, a wiring fault combined with an ungrounded outlet creates conditions where a user could receive an electric shock during normal operation.

Affected Models

This recall covers GE gas dryers with the following details:

  • Model Number: DWXR463GGWW
  • Serial Number Prefixes: AM, TL, SL, VL, and ZL
  • Description: 42-inch tall (with backsplash), 27-inch wide, white finish

Affected dryers were sold at retail stores and through authorized builder distributors nationwide from September 2006 through October 2007 for approximately $440.

Incidents Reported

No consumer injuries were reported at the time of this recall. GE issued the recall proactively after identifying the wiring short-circuit risk during quality inspection and safety evaluation processes.

Ge Dryer Recall What to Do

  1. Stop using the dryer immediately. Unplug the dryer’s electrical cord from the outlet.
  2. Check the model number on the label inside the door frame of the dryer. Also check the serial number prefix against AM, TL, SL, VL, or ZL.
  3. Do not attempt to use the dryer until GE has performed the free in-home inspection and repair.
  4. Verify your electrical outlet is grounded — though this alone does not eliminate the risk posed by the internal wiring short.
  5. Contact GE Appliances toll-free at 1-800-432-2737 to schedule the free in-home inspection and repair service.

Urgency: MODERATE. While no injuries were reported, an electrical short combined with an ungrounded outlet creates genuine shock risk. Unplug the dryer and contact GE to schedule the no-cost inspection and repair — do not continue using model DWXR463GGWW with the listed serial prefixes until the wiring has been serviced.
